Junior Athletics
Junior Athletics
Run. Jump. Throw. Learn. Grow.
Our Junior Athletics sessions are all about helping children and young people discover the joy of being active, develop new skills and have fun with others.
We welcome young people from 5 to 17 years old, with activities designed to suit different ages and abilities. Whether your child is already passionate about athletics or simply wants to try something new, our sessions are a great way to get moving, make friends and build confidence.
Run, jump and throw
Athletics is so much more than running!
Our sessions include a wide range of run, throw and jump activities, helping young people develop the fundamental skills that support a lifetime of physical activity.
As well as developing athletic ability, our sessions focus on:
- Agility
- Balance
- Co-ordination
- Fitness
- Movement skills
- Teamwork
- Confidence
- Working with others
We want children to enjoy being active, try new things and discover what they can achieve.
Sessions for different ages and abilities
We work with young people in age and ability groups, helping our coaches to provide activities that are appropriate, challenging and enjoyable for everyone.
Our sessions generally follow a simple format:
Warm-up → Main activity → Cool-down
The main activity will normally focus on one of the three core areas of athletics – running, throwing or jumping – with plenty of opportunities to learn, practise and have fun.
Our sessions are delivered by trained England Athletics coaches, who are all volunteers and give their time because they are passionate about helping young people enjoy sport and physical activity.
Nurturing the next generation of coaches
We don't just want to develop young athletes – we also want to help develop the coaches of the future.
We have a junior coaching pathway that encourages young people to learn more about athletics and, when they're ready, start supporting others.
From the age of 14, young people can begin their coaching journey with an Athletics Leader course, learning the basics of leading and supporting activities.
At 16, they can progress to an Assistant Coach course, giving them the opportunity to develop their coaching skills further and gain experience supporting younger athletes.
It's a fantastic way for young people to build confidence, leadership skills and experience, while giving something back to the sport they enjoy.
When and where?
Wyke College, Hull
Tuesdays
5pm–6pm: Ages 5–9 years
6pm–7pm: Ages 10–17 years
The cost is £2.50 per session. Places are secured by paying for the full half-term block in advance – for example, a six-week half term would cost £15.
There is also an annual Fitmums and Friends membership fee of £13.
Fitmums and Friends kit is available to purchase, so young people can look and feel part of the team. However, you don't need to have club kit to join us.
We work within strict coach/child ratios so it is important that places are booked in advance - please do not just turn up as you may be turned away.
Making athletics accessible to everyone
We never want cost to be a barrier to a child or young person being active.
If your family is experiencing financial difficulties and you're worried about the cost of taking part, our Mike Barlow Memorial Fund may be able to help with participation costs.
Please get in touch with us if you would like to find out more. We will always treat enquiries with sensitivity and confidentiality.
Our passion is helping young people enjoy being active
For us, Junior Athletics isn't just about developing the next generation of athletes. It's about helping children and young people discover that being active can be fun.
It's about learning to work with others, supporting your teammates, trying something new and celebrating your own progress.
It's about building confidence and developing skills that can help you both on and off the track.
And, most importantly, it's about creating positive experiences of physical activity that young people can carry with them throughout their lives.
Come and run, jump and throw with us – we'd love to welcome you to the team!
