In 2014 Fitmums & Friends embarked on a new fund raising challenge – the development of an Intergenerational Choir. It was an exciting experiment! Could a bunch of runners and walkers really be transformed into something we could sell tickets for, to raise money for charity?
There are strong parallels between singing & running which means the two activities are mutually beneficial. Running in a group and singing in a choir most definitely make you feel good. The buzz is amazing. Learning to control breathing whilst singing is also beneficial to runners learning to control their breathing when running.
Unbelievably about 70 Fitmums & Friends members (from all the Fitmums groups across Hull & East Riding) were up for the challenge. Over the course of 11 rehearsals a transformation happened – and a choir worthy of performing emerged -click here for photos. It was without doubt a success. Not only did we raise more than £1800 for our chosen charities we also saw the hugely positive effects of singing and of working inter-generationally. Children and adults alike told us of the huge benefits to them of being involved -click here for testimonials.
We thought it was a one-off but it was such a huge success that it returned in 2015 in aid of two more charities. This time the event raised a massive £2500! Then for a third consecutive year in 2016 the choir returned and raised over £1600 for two more charities.
This year the Fitmums & Friends 2017 Choir will perform on Saturday 24th March at 6.30pm at Cottingham High School. See our chosen charities page for details of beneficiaries. Tickets are available from firstname.lastname@example.org at £5 adults, £2 children, under 5's free. This is could not be achieved without Cottingham High School who yet again have supported the Fitmums & Friends Choir by providing a fabulous venue.
For the second year running, the choir has representatives from all 5 Fitmums & Friends clubs in Hull and East Yorkshire, and involves adult and junior members who run, fitness walk, cycle and now sing. This year also sees the welcome return of our first choir lead Ruthie. It has been an intense 10 week training schedule, but we hope to entertain our 2017 audience with a fun filled night of singing, entertainment and of course cake!
Run session for children aged between 6 & 15 years of age. Kids take part in a range of runs from 1 to 3 miles depending on age, ability and availability of adult volunteer leaders!
