About the Fitmums & Friends Cycle Squad (FMCS)
How it began
The Fitmums & Friends Cycle Squad formed in 2015 when a group of mainly novice riders embarked upon a challenge to cycle 240 miles to Oxford over 3 days in aid of The Brain Tumour Charity (raising over £6000 in the process). This challenge, known as THOR (The Hull to Oxford Ride was the beginning of a new branch of the Fitmums & friends network – the Cycle Squad was born!
There are currently two Fitmums & Friends cycle squads, in Cottingham and Hedon. To find out more see here.
What to expect?
Everyone is welcome – male, female, you don’t need to be a mum/dad or fit. Distances vary according to the abilities within the group and whether squads are training for an event. Each Club will endeavour to support complete beginners – you only need to chat/email our Club Co-ordinators to find out how. Leaders support the group to ensure no one gets lost or left behind. Rides go at a pace that will suit all the members of the group (sometimes splitting into paced groups), and use a system of ‘rolling regroups’ to keep everyone together. The rides are not competitive, and are social occasions as much as exercise.
Riding as a group involves respect for others and good communication – the FMCS uses the standard cycling hand signals – see https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/insightzone/techniques/group_riding/article/izn20141114-Road-How-to-communicate-with-signals-in-a-bunch---Racesmart-0
There are flat routes and hilly routes, entirely on the road and incorporating off road sections, and go through town and countryside. The routes for each ride are published in advance with maps and directions available. A list of routes are available here – so if you want to plan a ride yourself or with a group of friends feel free to use these.
The wearing of helmets is compulsory for all Fitmums Cycle Squad rides.
To take part in a Fitmums Cycle ride you’ll need: a suitable bicycle for you and the route, a spare inner tube of the correct size, lights, clothing appropriate to the weather (hi vis), water or other drink, snacks, emergency contact details. If you need more advice or suggestions about where to get kit, please get in touch (details below).
Fitmums & Friends Cycle Squad branded cycle clothing is available to order here.
Come and try up to 3 rides before you decide whether the Fitmums Cycle Squad is the right group for you. If it is, membership is £35 for the year. Details about membership can be found here. Membership means you can access any Fitmums & Friends sessions anywhere – not just the Club you join. This includes buggy, fitness walk and run sessions as well as coached sessions including strength & conditioning, grass track & hill sessions (all suitable for runners/walkers) and excellent for supporting cycle fitness.
